Hello and welcome to IMMERSED, my blog dedicated to inspiring maritime archaeology adventures. Whether you are a scuba diver, travel buff, culture vulture, an armchair adventurer, or your interest in the past is limited to reading this… IMMERSED has something for everyone.
Over the coming weeks and months, I am going to let you into my underwater world. I will show you the magic of our maritime past; an immense ocean of information that reveals who we are and how we came to be here.
So, how will I do this? By plunging into the past, Indiana Jones style. I’m will open up and share my own experiences with you. Whether I’m searching for shipwrecks, surveying sites or evaluating equipment, I’ll tell you all about it. I will share with you what I did, how I did it, what I learned from it, and most importantly, what opportunities might exist for you.
In time, you’ll get:
- updates from the field;
- ramblings about my research;
- interviews with incredible trowel-blazing archaeologists;
- opportunities to try a trowel on for size;
- archaeology news and views from around the world;
- access to my test pit where I try out new techniques and equipment;
- priceless project and training opportunities; and
- you guessed it; free downloadable resources designed to inspire your own journey into the past.
Why would I do such a thing? You see, I’m a big believer in access for all, preservation through education, and that the past holds the key to our future. What’s more, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that the underwater and maritime cultural heritage we inherited, is preserved for present and future generations.
Who am I?
I’m Sarah Ward.
That’s me in the photo.
I’m a maritime archaeology professor, commercial diver, and project director with over 20-years’ international experience, on, in and around the water. I’ve worked on sites dating from prehistory to the present in about 35 countries. I’ve surveyed submerged caves in Scotland, dived drowned landscapes in Denmark, explored sunken cities in China, and am currently contemplating shipwrecks in Cambodia.
